Migraine or Cervicogenic Headache?

Most of us are familiar with headaches and some of us are, unfortunately familiar with migraines.  Migraine headaches are thought to be caused by vascular, biochemical, neurotransmitter or neurological issues.  However, an underlying cause for both migraines and less severe headaches is called "cervicogenic headache".  Cervico means cervical spine and genic meaning generated from.  It involves dysfunction of the joints in the upper cervical spine, causing irritation to the Greater Occipital nerve -- which leads to pain communicated into the head.  I have seen many patients who have suffered long term with headaches and even migraines, who have had their headaches resolve with a course of chiropractic care for the cervical spine.
